Professor Lukas Dekker is a cardiologist at the Catharina Hospital Eindhoven, specialized in diagnosing and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. He is also involved in several basic research projects; he, for example, supervises an experimental project in Bordeaux, France, about the role of atrial wall stress in the occurrence as well as treatment of atrial fibrillation. He is part-time professor at the departments of Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Academic background

Lukas Dekker studied medicine in Amsterdam; he finished his cardiology training in 2003 in Amsterdam. In 1996 he finished his PhD about ‘Role of intracellular calcium in ischemic damage and preconditioning in cardiac muscle’ with honours.
From 2008 onwards he works as a cardiologist-electrophysiologist in the Catharina Hospital Eindhoven.

Dr. Dekker is co-founder and board member of the Netherlands Heart Network, www.nederlandshartnetwerk.nl. This collaboration in the Eindhoven area between cardiologists and general practitioners aims at improving cardiac care.
He is a active member of the steering committee of e/MTIC, www.e/MTIC.nl.
Dr. Dekker is founder of www.hart.volgers.org, the largest community for cardiac patients in Europe.
