Fabric 4 Masks

Project: Research direct

Project Details

Description

Fabric4Masks is an urgent and timely project to rethink and redesign woven protective materials to the highest technical level possible in a fast-moving 18 month iterative design process, innovated in a cross disciplinary team and with a proposed manufacturing concept that will allow us to design, develop and iterate with local experts and within local supply chains.

The goal of the project is to establish an agile regional network (in the Eindhoven area) for the prototyping and home production of masks, based on innovative 3d double woven fabrics and state-of-the-art design methodologies. As such the aim is three-fold:

1. Investigate the possibilities of local production systems that can produce material in a distributed manner, with a focus on scalability, distribution and agile developments of designs and methods of production

2. Explore the potential of 3D woven materials for protective use, based on available production systems and material streams.

3. Design and iterate masks (or other fabric based protective gear) that through their design makes the most of the potential of the material developed in point 2, and the possibilities for distributed production in point 1.
