Combining model-based control and data-driven learning is crucial in our increasingly complex world.

Academic background

Koen Classens received the B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (cum laude) from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 2016. From the same university, he received the M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (cum laude) and the M.Sc. in Systems & Control (cum laude), both in 2019. In 2018 he was a research intern at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) where he collaborated in a research project about the design, modelling and control of a modular snake robot with torque feedback for locomotion on surfaces with irregularities. His M.Sc. graduation work was on ‘Multiphysical Modeling and Control of Photopolymerization for Additive Manufacturing’ and contributes to a new process control paradigm where material properties are controlled in closed-loop and in real-time at the full machine scale. His work was awarded with the MSc thesis award (Mechanical Engineering) and the Unilever Research Prize.

Research profile

Koen Classens is currently a Doctoral Candidate at the Control Systems Technology (CST) group at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Department of Mechanical Engineering. His current research interests include digital twinning, fault detection and isolation for predictive maintenance in high-tech equipment with a particular focus on the semiconductor industry.
